COERR Support Youth in Activities for the Elderly in Refugee Camps

   In April 2019, COERR Mae Sarieng, Mae Sot and Mae Hong Son supported several youth activities for the elderly who are in vulnerable or sick condition in their communities.

   During monthly home visits by COERR Mae Sarieng’s camp-based social worker, many elderly refugees were found to have problems concerning health, food and living condition. Therefore, a plan to support the youth in their activities for the vulnerable elderly was made: 16 houses were visited and provided with needy supplies like water buckets, stoves, cement and nails to repair the elderly’ houses, healthy food for the sick, etc.

   On April 8th, COERR supported building materials for 14 youth in Ban Mae La Oon comprising 6 female and 8 male to construct some toilets for the elderly.

   On April 20th, the youth in Ban Mae Lama Luang numbering 24, of 14 female and 10 male had gathered to build toilets for the elderly to use as well.

   At the COERR Social Service Center, monthly activities for elderly continued as usual. On April 23rd and 24th, the elderly groups came to do cultural activities like singing and performing. On 25th, there was soy bean milk making activity for elderly to enjoy their healthy drinks.

   COERR Mae Sot supported the youth for elderly activity in which 30 youth of 17 female and 13 male paid home visit to the vulnerable elderly who was too weak to leave the house to attend the public ceremony for elderly. Water blessing ceremony was simply held at the elderly’s house in order to follow the tradition and to provide the elderly with moral support.

   On April 16th, 18th and 19th COERR Mae Hong Son organized dish washing liquid making course for 85 elderly. After the training, a bottle of the product was given to each of the elderly participant to use at home.

   COERR Mae Hong Son supported leaves for roof repair to Ban Mai Nai Soi Youth Club’s 5 members when they visited the sick and vulnerable elderly’s house on April 13th. Youth also help clean and arrange their house and put things in place, etc. In Ban Mae Surin camp, two groups of 15 and 11 youth members also paid visits to repair houses of elderly on April 14th and 15th respectively.
